Janine Hickl

I'm Janine – an actress, singer, voice artist and swing dancer from Vienna. What drives me is the art of storytelling - through song, dance or spoken word.
My artistic journey began with a degree in musical theatre, where I trained in singing, dance, and acting. I later deepened my acting studies in London and Vienna - two cities where I now live and work.
Over the past years, I’ve had the chance to perform in film, television and theatre productions, to tour with different ensembles and plays, and to lend my voice to international projects. Some of the screen work I’ve been part of has even received international awards - an unexpected and truly lovely recognition that I deeply appreciate.
While I have a strong connection to musical theatre, I’m particularly drawn to swing. As a singer in various ensembles and a swing dancer, I’m fascinated by the energy, rhythm and joy of this music. With my trio The Reveilles, I bring the songs of the Andrews Sisters back to life. With the band Zazous and the British formation Rustique Musique, I perform swing and soul classics on stage. As soon as the swing starts playing, I simply can’t stand still - which is why I also work as a Lindy Hop dancer and enjoy teaching this dance to others.
Another important part of my artistic work is the genre of chanson. Inspired by the great female voices of past decades, I interpret French and German chansons together with the team of Relic Music. It’s a heartfelt mission of mine to keep these timeless songs alive and to pass them on.
One of my most personal projects is my self-written monodrama Nothing in Between - The Simple, Complicated Life of Hedy Lamarr. Since 2023, I’ve been performing it across Europe, America and Africa. The piece tells the moving story of Austrian-born Hollywood actress, inventor and visionary Hedy Lamarr - a woman who spent her life fighting for recognition, both privately and publicly.
In 2024, another heartfelt project was born: DIVAS – Les Grandes Dames de la Chanson. Together with the musicians from my collective Relic Music, I take audiences on a musical journey through the world of French and German chansons - from the 1920s to the 1970s – telling the stories of strong women whose voices deserve to be heard.
Alongside my work on stage and in front of the camera, I’m also active as a voice artist.
For me, this profession is a constant encounter - with others, with stories and with myself. And if something I create moves or touches you, then I know that my work has been worthwhile.
